Otto Walter Lecture in International Law

This lecture series was established by New York Law School to honor its distinguished alumnus and benefactor, the late Otto Walter '54, who founded Walter, Conston, Alexander & Green, PC, a firm that became well-known for its specialized practice in transnational law and would later merge with Alston & Bird, LLP. At the time of his death in 2003, Dr. Walter was senior counsel at the firm.  In Memoriam Otto L. Walter '54

The series addresses topics in international business transactions. Recent Otto Walter lecturers include:

2006: "Civil Liberties in the Age of Terrorism," with Floyd Abrams, First Amendment rights attorney

2005: "Rethinking the War on Terror," with Anne-Marie Slaughter, Dean, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University

2004: "The First Steps of the International Criminal Court: Building a Credible Court of Last Resort," with Luis Moreno Ocampo, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court

2003: "The Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization," with ," with Former Chairman of the Appellate Body

2002: "Multidisciplinary Practice and the European Court of Justice" with Advocate-General Anthony Huydecoper, Supreme Court of the Netherlands


Otto Walter International Fellows Program

Established with Otto Walter’s support to attract an outstanding scholar, practitioner, or public servant in the field of international affairs. The Walter Fellow is in residence for a one- or two-day period during which he or she coteaches a class in international law, gives a major address, and meets with faculty and students having a special interest in international affairs.

The 1995 Walter Fellow was Rosalyn Higgins, QC, professor of international law at the London School of Economics, and the United Kingdom’s representative on the Human Rights Committee.

The 1994 Walter Fellow was Assistant Secretary John Shattuck, Bureau of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, U.S. Department of State.
