Information Privacy Law
Information Privacy Law is the study of the legal, social, legislative, and philosophical framework through which we share or hide information about ourselves. This has particular relevance today, given the many threats to our privacy and the integrity of our data. The course will begin with a review of the origins and underlying principles as explained in law review articles, cases, and statutes in the United States and we will discuss the development of constitutional, tort, contract, property, and statutory law to address emerging threats to privacy. Students will learn about the connections between privacy and the media, privacy and law enforcement, the workplace and privacy, privacy and online transactions, medical and genetic privacy, and privacy and personal records and information.
This upper-level substantive course focuses on the legislation, regulations, public policy and case law related to how we share and/or hide personal information.
