Judicial Externship Placement and Seminar

This course includes a placement with a federal judge or a state court judge in New York City or surrounding jurisdictions with a related seminar. Students work with the judge or on placement work for a minimum of 140 hours (10–12 hours a week during the fall and spring semesters and 20 hours per week during the shorter summer session). Students also attend the Judicial Externship Seminar. The seminar meets every other week during the fall and spring semesters and every week during the shorter summer session. The topics explored in the seminar include: research and legal writing for a judge, as well as opinion writing and bench memos; judicial selection processes; judicial ethics and oversight; judicial decision-making; the role of the judge in settlement, pretrial, and trial processes; and the effects of the judge.

This externship experience is comprised of an externship placement with a judge in New York City or surrounding jurisdictions and a co-requisite seminar.
