Patent Litigation is designed to acquaint students with the basic milestones of and strategy for patent litigation. It examines the traditional sequence of a patent lawsuit, from the filing of the complaint, through technology tutorials, claim construction, expert reports, motions for summary judgment, and ultimately, trial and appeal. The course also grounds students in the discovery process in patent litigation, including drafting claim charts and patent family trees. Lastly, the course, from time to time, makes use of topical material as it arises during the semester. The course generally employs a casebook, but also makes use of primary documents and court decisions examining those documents.

This upper-level substantive course provides an overview in the basic milestones of and strategy for patent litigation.
