Profile
Molly Guptill Manning is an Associate Professor of Law at New York Law School, where she teaches Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law I and II, Federal Courts, and Professional Responsibility.
Professor Manning’s scholarship focuses on legal history and the intersection between law and culture. She has written articles on soldiers’ voting rights, fraud and poetic license, and prisoner’s access to the federal courts. Her articles have been published in the Columbia Journal of Law and the Arts, New York University Journal of Legislation and Public Policy, and the Federal Bar Council Quarterly, to name a few. She has also written several books including When Books Went to War, a New York Times best seller. She is currently working on a fourth book on the First Amendment. She has been interviewed on MSNBC, NPR Morning Edition, and WNYC, and she has given talks across the United States, including at the FDR Presidential Library, the Library of Congress, and the U.S. Senate Library.
Professor Manning is the curator of the exhibit "The Best-Read Army in the World," which is on display at the Grolier Club from September through December 2023. The exhibit features approximately 250 items that showcase the story of how the American government supplied troops with over 140 million books between 1943 and 1947. It also traces Congressional censorship attempts to limit the subject matter of what troops could read—political books were briefly prohibited—as well as how soldier voting rights were impacted by Congress's actions.
Before entering academia, Professor Manning was a supervisory staff attorney at the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She has also clerked for the Honorable Kevin Nathaniel Fox at the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
