Alternative Dispute Resolution Skills Program
The Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Skills Program conveys not only doctrinal education, but also empirical and practical skills in the field of conflict avoidance, management and resolution.
The ADR Skills Program also seeks to engage the legal departments, law firms, courts, and government agencies of the New York City region by hosting CLE courses, speaking events, guest lectures on campus, and onsite “bespoke” trainings to add value to the broader legal community.
Students gain an initial familiarity with the broadly recognized formal procedures of ADR through introductory courses in negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. They further their study through doctrinal and clinical opportunities in deal negotiation, conflict negotiation, domestic and international mediation and arbitration, court-annexed ADR, cross-cultural negotiation, and area-specific dispute resolution regimes such as employment, securities, and family law dispute resolution. A focused externship program affords students opportunities to observe and participate in actual arbitration and mediation procedures and to develop professional contacts in the field.
The Program leads to the granting of a Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Graduates will enter the legal market equipped with direct experience and practical skills in negotiating, drafting, mediating, and arbitrating deals and conflicts ethically and creatively.
For Students
All NYLS students are welcome to join the Program. Those who share a strong interest in ADR; seek to develop their negotiating, drafting, mediating, and arbitrating skills; and wish to explore experiential learning and professional development opportunities in the field are encouraged to apply.
