This course will introduce students to the principles of insurance law nationwide, with an emphasis on New York and New Jersey practice. The course work and case studies will address policy formation, insurable interest, contractual interpretation, use of commercial liability insurance and other forms of risk transfer in business and commerce, and how to master specific common provisions and discern their meaning. Students will learn though judicial and statutory law how to read, understand, and apply complex insurance provisions as interpreted on the state and federal levels.

This upper-level seminar will help students understand the role of insurance in all manner of business, commerce, and personal injury, property damage, and professional liability litigation. There will be multiple writing opportunities and class participation is encouraged.
