Through the James Tricarico Jr. Institute for the Business of Law and In-House Counsel, New York Law School aims to serve as the preeminent thought leader and training center for law students and practitioners, with a deep commitment to NYLS’s vast alumni network and in-house legal community, focused on professional excellence, integrity, and innovative lawyer leadership. This seminar serves as the centerpiece of the Institute’s curriculum, which builds on other course offerings and on Institute programming to prepare NYLS students to prepare for and thrive in in-house roles.

This two-credit seminar will serve as an introduction to the work of in-house counsel. Each class will involve simulation of real-life scenarios that general counsels and other in-house counsel confront. The class will cover general principles on the effective, prudential practice of in-house law and risk management. The class will also delve into specific areas of in-house practice that are pillars of in-house work: ethics, employment law and relations, data management (classification, privacy, and security), contracts, regulations and compliance, management of outside counsel, and counsel’s role in negotiations.
