Commercial banks play a crucial role in any economy by providing credit and loans, facilitating payments, and safeguarding assets. Given their importance, they are one of the most heavily regulated institutions in any nation. In recent months, banks have frequently made headlines as they face different financial pressures
in a changing economy.

Christine Tomczak ’95, Assistant Counsel at the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS), will give an overview of how DFS oversees and regulates New York State-chartered commercial banks as well as other financial entities licensed in New York, and talk about possible challenges facing the DFS as a financial regulator in the years ahead.

The Ronald H. Filler Institute for Financial Services Law is housed within the Center for Business and Financial Law.
