Profile
Andrea Johnson is an Associate Professor of Law at New York Law School. She teaches courses in areas of contracts, employment discrimination, and civil rights litigation. Prior to joining NYLS in 2024, Professor Johnson was a Visiting Assistant Professor and Diversity and Inclusion Fellow at Rutgers Law School in Camden. She also previously taught legal writing at West Virginia University College of Law, where she served as the inaugural fellow of the Fitzsimmons Center for Litigation and Advocacy.
Professor Johnson brings practice experience in workplace discrimination and civil rights litigation. Prior to academia, she litigated employment and civil rights cases, and she served as a federal law clerk for the Honorable Victoria Roberts in the Eastern District of Michigan. Professor Johnson’s scholarship centers on civil rights and employment litigation, examining procedural rules and judicial doctrines that impede employment civil rights claims. Her work focuses on the limitations and unreliability of civil rights litigation and proposes interventions to benefit plaintiffs in accessing justice. These inquiries frequently provide a natural segue to consider the interactions between race, racism, and the law. Professor Johnson holds a J.D. (Order of the Coif, summa cum laude) from West Virginia University.
