Profile

After graduating from New York Law School, Hon. Joel H. Slomsky '70 began his legal career as a Special Attorney with the United States Department of Justice, working as part of the Philadelphia Strike Force within the Criminal Division. From 1974, Judge Slomsky spent over three decades in private practice. He primarily served as a criminal defense attorney representing clients in state and federal court before the grand jury, at trial, and on appeal. Judge Slomsky was admitted to practice in many venues, from the Supreme Court of the United States to numerous Courts of Appeal and District Courts. He became a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on October 8, 2008.

Throughout his career, Judge Slomsky was a member of numerous Bar Associations and a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Judge Slomsky teaches a class on Judicial Clerkships at Villanova Law School and has guest-lectured at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple, and Rutgers Law Schools. While an editor for The Philadelphia Lawyer, he authored several articles covering money laundering, financial reporting crimes, and federal sentencing guidelines.
